Outrage in the US After Truck Driver Gets 110 Years for Fatal Collision

In the United States, there has been a stir after a 26-year-old truck driver was sentenced to 110 years in prison.

Rogel Aguilera-Mederos, a Cuban immigrant, lost control of his truck in April 2019 and ran into stationary traffic. He caused a serious accident in which 4 people died. He was found guilty of all charges, for which he received the minimum sentence.

In the state of Colorado, these are added up, which means that he has to spend 110 years in prison.

That heavy sentence is causing a lot of controversy in Colorado and the US. The young man had no criminal record, but according to the prosecutor, he knew his brakes were not working, and he was not using the emergency lane for trucks.

A juror later anonymously told Fox, “she had never cried like this” after the verdict. The judge also indicated that he would have preferred a different outcome: “If I had the choice, this would not be the punishment for me.”
