Marchionne must stop because of health problems.
The company, which also includes Ferrari, declared Saturday that its condition has quickly deteriorated due to complications after an operation.
Manley was chief of Jeep, a part of Fiat Chrysler. The group would initially choose a successor for Marchionne at the end of the year.
The appointment of Manley is officially made at the next shareholders’ meeting.
In the meantime, he will be in charge of the interim management.
John Elkann is the new chairman of Ferrari due to the disappearance of Marchionne.
He reportedly brought in former Philip Morris CEO Louis Carey Camilleri as the new chairman.
