Daughter of Former President Sentenced to Five Years in Prison in Iran for Critical Statements
An Iranian court has sentenced renowned politician Faezeh Hashemi Rafsanjani, daughter of former Iranian president Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, to five years in prison.
However, the Iranian media Hammihan and Emtedad avoided that. Rafsanjani would have made “critical statements” about the regime and incited protest.
Hashemi was arrested in Tehran in late September, just after widespread protests broke out following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amin. Now a court has also ruled that she will have to serve a sentence of five years in prison, but Hashemi plans to appeal the decision, according to her lawyer.
Women’s rights activist has often run afoul of the law in the Islamic republic. This summer, she was accused of propaganda against the Islamic Republic and blasphemy on social media.
