At Least Four Dead, Several Injured in Explosion at Taiwan Shopping Mall

At least four people were killed in an explosion at a Taiwanese shopping mall on Thursday around 11:30 local time, the fire department reported. In addition, one person “shows no signs of life,” and seven were injured.

The fire brigade said it is believed to have been a gas explosion, but the cause has yet to be confirmed.

The explosion occurred on the 12th floor of the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi shopping mall in Taichung, in the island’s centre. According to the fire department, renovation occurred near the food court where the explosion occurred. The food stalls were closed at the time.

As many as 136 firefighters were called to help with the rescue and search operation. Images show debris from the building and ambulances taking people away.
