Macron: The Fight Against Terrorism Requires An International Approach

Terrorism is an international threat that requires an international response. French President Emmanuel Macron wrote this on Twitter on Wednesday, referring to the recent beheadings in Mozambique.

“In Mozambique, more than 50 people have been beheaded, women kidnapped, villages looted and then set on fire. Barbarians hijack a religion of peace to spread terror,” Macron said.

Reports of recent attacks on civilians in Mozambique highlight the threat of Islamist terrorism to the international community, Macron said.

At least 50 people have been killed in recent days in attacks by fighters linked to the Islamic State terrorist movement, local media reported. United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an investigation.

Just this week, the EU held a mini-summit on the recent jihadist terror threat. European leaders are looking for a typical European response to the new wave of attacks in Paris, Nice and Vienna in recent weeks. For example, French President Emmanuel Macron and other European leaders want better security of the European borders.

Macron and Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz pressed for more decisive European action against Muslim extremists. Kurz wants to limit the freedoms of Syria goers, and other jihadists and Macron advocated, among other things, a reform of the free movement of persons within the EU.

It is “to a certain extent the last chance” for the last “great achievement” of the EU, Prime Minister Mark Rutte warned at the summit. If the EU countries do not close their external borders better to malicious parties, the Schengen treaty that stipulates free travel will “inevitably”, he says.
