Trump’s Lead in Georgia is Tightening
President Donald Trump’s lead over his challenger Joe Biden is shrinking in the US state of Georgia (16 electors). Where Trump was 0.7 percent ahead of Biden a few hours ago, the difference has now dropped to 0.5 percent.
Trump currently holds 49.6 percent of the vote, Biden 49.1 percent. 95 percent of the votes have now been counted.
According to the American newspaper The New York Times, Biden was still 100,000 votes behind Trump on Wednesday morning local time, but that lead of the president has now fallen to 24,000 votes or 0.5 percent.
Georgia law states that a candidate may request a recount if the difference is 0.5 percent or less.
According to the newspaper, Biden is catching up to the votes counted in the Atlanta area, where many Democratic voters live. However, voices are still coming in from the outskirts, where Republicans are better represented.
Trump previously announced that he is going to court in Georgia, among other places, to prevent ballots sent by post that were received too late from being counted. In Georgia, only postal votes are counted that are received no later than 7:00 p.m. on election day.
